Beard oil is a leave-in oil you work through your beard and into the skin underneath. It conditions and softens the hair, moisturizes the skin beneath it, and leaves a scent. It does not cleanse, and it is not the product to reach for when you want hold. The American Academy of Dermatology's (AAD) beard care plan (last updated December 2021) names beard oil as the moisturizer for normal to dry skin once your stubble has grown into a beard, and the rest of this guide is about doing that step well.
What is beard oil?
Beard oil is a cosmetic oil blend made for facial hair. You put it on after washing, over the beard and the skin beneath it, and you leave it in. Dermatologists quoted by the AAD say to apply it right after washing, to both skin and beard, and to massage it through.
Our Sandalwood Beard Oil comes in a 2 oz (about 59 ml) dropper bottle. The Beard Oil Variety 4-Pack holds four 0.66 oz (about 20 ml) droppers: Citrus, Vanilla, Cedarwood and Sandalwood.
What does beard oil do for the hair?
It conditions and softens it. Hair carries its own lipids, which help it resist damage and keep its shine. A 2023 review in the journal Cosmetics notes that routine washing with surfactants removes some of those lipids, and that lipid-based products, oils among them, can restore lipids lost to damage and improve surface texture and shine.
That is the general principle. Striking Viking beard oil is made to condition and soften beard hair, and customers describe the result in plainer terms: the beard sits better and is easier to work with.
What does beard oil do for the skin under the beard?
It moisturizes it. The AAD says moisturizing helps soften both the skin and the beard hairs, and that without a moisturizer the skin beneath a beard can get dry, flaky and itchy, which leaves the beard feeling dry and prickly. For normal to dry skin, the dermatologist the AAD interviewed recommends beard oil. Striking Viking beard oil is made to moisturize the skin beneath the beard, so the routine below works the oil down to the skin and not just along the hair.
What does beard oil do for scent?
It adds one, and this is the part worth setting expectations on. Customers in the US and UK tell us beard oil scent is a close-range note that softens as the day goes on. Expect to notice it when you lift a hand to your beard, not from across the room. If you would rather smell of nothing at all, there is an unscented oil in the range.
The scents sort easily. Sandalwood is warm and grounded, Vanilla is sweet, and Blue Ocean is fresh and clean.
What is beard oil not for?
Beard oil does not cleanse. The AAD's plan starts with washing your face and beard every day with a gentle cleanser rather than soap, and the oil comes after that.
It is also not the product for hold. If you want to shape your beard as well as condition it, a balm is the better tool, and our guide to using beard balm properly covers how.
Who is beard oil for?
The AAD matches the product to your skin and to how far along your beard is. Its guidance reads like this:
| Your situation | What the AAD's dermatologist recommends |
|---|---|
| Stubble phase | A moisturizer with SPF 30 or higher, made for your skin type, until the beard covers your skin |
| Beard has grown in, normal to dry skin | Beard oil |
| Beard has grown in, acne-prone skin | Beard conditioner |
| Beard has grown in, sensitive skin that often feels irritated | A fragrance-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer |
So beard oil is for a grown-in beard over skin that runs normal to dry. If you sit in another row, follow that row.
How do you use beard oil?
- Wash first. Use a gentle cleanser, rinse well with lukewarm water, and pat your face dry so the skin stays a little damp.
- Start small. Put a small amount of oil in your palm and rub your hands together.
- Work it up and in. Massage the oil upward through the beard and into the skin underneath.
- Finish downward. Groom the beard down and run a comb through to spread the oil evenly, which is what the AAD suggests. Our combs vs brushes guide helps you choose one.
- Add more only if you need it. Use oil sparingly to avoid a greasy look, and top up from there.
Some customers find an oil heavier than they expected, and the last step is the fix. After a shave, the AAD says to put your moisturizer or beard oil on right away.
Which Striking Viking beard oil should you start with?
If you want one bottle, the Sandalwood Beard Oil is a 2 oz dropper with a warm, classic scent. If you cannot settle on a scent, the Beard Oil Variety 4-Pack lets you try Citrus, Vanilla, Cedarwood and Sandalwood side by side. Customers tend to treat the scents like a wardrobe, which makes a sampler a natural way in and an easy gift for a bearded friend.
Beard oil questions
Should I use beard oil every day?
For most beards sitting on normal to dry skin, yes, as part of a daily wash, moisturize and groom routine. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) builds its plan on that daily rhythm, and for normal to dry skin its moisturizing step is beard oil.
Should beard oil go on a wet or dry beard?
Apply it straight after washing, once you have patted your face dry but while the skin is still a little damp. The AAD says damp skin makes the moisturizing step more effective.
How much beard oil should I use?
Start small. The AAD says to use beard oil sparingly to avoid a greasy look, and that you can always add more.
What is the difference between beard oil and beard balm?
Oil conditions and softens. Balm conditions too, and it also helps control and shape the beard. Choose oil when conditioning is the goal and balm when you want some hold as well.
Does the scent of beard oil last all day?
Not at full strength. Customers in the US and UK describe it as a close-range scent that fades through the day, so think of it as a light finish and add a little more oil if you want it back.
